Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Friday that the Delhi government is considering studying Mumbai’s Dharavi model for the redevelopment of 675 slum clusters across the national capital. The Dharavi redevelopment project in Mumbai is being undertaken through a special purpose vehicle, a joint venture between the Adani Group and the Maharashtra government.
Gupta addressed concerns about slum demolitions, stating that her government’s aim is not to demolish houses, but rather to ensure safety and prevent situations where people continue to occupy slums despite being offered homes. She urged residents to prioritize their safety, specifically warning against constructing homes near railway lines, citing the potential dangers and questions of responsibility in case of accidents. She also noted that there was misinformation circulating regarding the demolition of slum clusters.
